ABOUT THE IVCSD:

Isla Vista is a vibrant, close-knit oceanside community in Santa Barbara County, renowned for its youthful energy and adventurous residents. The Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) was established in 2017 (pursuant to Government Code § 61250), following decades of local efforts toward self-governance. As an unincorporated community, IVCSD is the first local government body dedicated to addressing the unique needs of its residents.

The IVCSD oversees a diverse range of programs and services designed to enhance quality of life, including public safety initiatives, a rental housing mediation program, community beautification efforts, compost collection services, and more. Our budget reflects our commitment to these critical services and ongoing community development.

Our team consists of a dedicated General Manager, Assistant General Manager, Community Programs & Engagement Director, Compost Collective Program Manager, Isla Vista Beautiful Program Manager, Community Engagement Project Manager, and Community Spaces Project Manager, supported by a network of contractors and community partners. Together, we work to foster a connected, sustainable, and thriving Isla Vista.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Government Administration Intern to support a variety of administrative and operational projects. This internship offers the opportunity to work closely with IVCSD staff and community partners on a variety of initiatives that serve the community of Isla Vista. This position will assist with tasks such as maintaining records, organizing digital files, supporting communication initiatives, and contributing to the development of community resources. The position offers the opportunity to make a positive impact in Isla Vista while learning about local government and public service in a dynamic, community-focused environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Provide general administrative assistance, including data entry, scheduling, report generation, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the District.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining District records, including board meeting minutes, resolutions, contracts, and other official documents. Ensure proper filing for easy accessibility and transparency, adhering to regulatory requirements and retention policies.
  • Review and finalize record resolutions, ensuring the resolution process is completed accurately and filed appropriately.
  • Organize and maintain the District’s digital files, ensuring efficient and user-friendly access to documents across platforms. Develop and implement a structured system for file naming and categorization to improve organization within the District's Google Drive and other platforms.
  • Contribute to the development of community resources for the District's website and outreach efforts, compiling accurate, informative, and engaging content for public use.
  • Conduct research on relevant policies, community needs, or administrative best practices to support ongoing District initiatives and future projects.
  • Collaborate with staff and community partners on the planning and execution of various projects, contributing to the overall success of District programs.

OTHER DUTIES: To support IVCSD operations other duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. This position requires work on weekends and evenings as needed.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Understands the landscape and the culture of Isla Vista.
  • Skilled in using Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms for collaborative projects, data management, and presentations.
  • Familiar with standard administrative practices including document filing, data entry, and report generation.
  • Some knowledge of local government in California is preferred, but not required.

SKILL/ABILITY TO:

  • Represent the District in a professional and courteous manner
  • Use both written and oral forms of communication 
  • Work cooperatively with IVCSD staff, stakeholders, service providers, and the public
  • Clearly communicate with others within and outside of the workplace
  • Work in a collaborative environment
  • Plan, develop, revise, and complete projects in a timely manner
  • Be organized and have good time management skills
  • Problem solve and maintain a solution-oriented mindset to formulate new and innovative solutions.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION 

  • Minimum: 3rd-year undergraduate student studying in Economics, Public Administration, Political Science, Business, or a related field.
  • Preferred: 4th-year undergraduate student with coursework in Economics, Accounting, Public Administration, Business, or similar disciplines.
  • Ideal: Demonstrated experience in one or more of the relevant areas outlined above, with proficiency in handling projects across various administrative methods.
