Isla Vista Tree Initiative

Isla Vista is severely lacking trees, and we want to change that. The IVCSD Tree Initiative offers property owners and those with property management authority the chance to receive FREE trees. Choose from a variety of 15 gallon, juvenile trees. This initiative not only beautifies our neighborhood but also strengthens our climate resilience and creates a healthier environment for everyone - all while offering you valuable benefits as a property owner.

Why We’re Planting Trees:

Isla Vista's tree canopy currently covers only about 15%, well below the recommended 25-30% needed to maximize environmental and public health benefits. To bridge this gap, The IVCSD is offering free trees to the community through the Isla Vista Tree Initiative. By expanding our tree canopy, we can enhance Isla Vista’s beauty while tackling key environmental and public health challenges. Trees provide natural shade, making our streets more walkable and comfortable by mitigating the urban heat island effect. As they grow, trees remove airborne pollutants  such as ozone gas and carbon dioxide.  They also act as filters by reducing the level of toxic metals in our soil. Beyond climate benefits, trees support biodiversity by creating habitats for pollinators and local wildlife. They play a crucial role in water management as well, helping to prevent flooding by absorbing rainwater runoff. Most importantly, research shows that green spaces positively impact mental and physical well-being, making Isla Vista a healthier place to live. By planting more trees, we’re investing in a stronger, more sustainable future for our community.

Why Property Owners Should Join:

Beyond benefiting our community, planting a tree on your property comes with great perks:

  • Boost Property Value – A beautiful yard not only attracts renters but also increases the market value of your property.
  • Lower Water and Maintenance Costs – Trees require significantly less water than grass, and the mulch and shade around them reduces the need for frequent watering.
  • Energy Savings
    • Summer: Shade from trees can cool your home, reducing air conditioning costs. Additionally, planting trees near your AC unit can improve its efficiency by keeping it cool.
    • Winter: Trees block chilly winds, keeping your home warmer.
  • Prevent Soil Erosion – Trees stabilize soil, protecting your property from erosion.

Best of all? We make it EASY for you.
