About the Isla Vista Compost Collective (IVCC)

Isla Vista Compost Collective provides services to approximately 96 households and has diverted over 33,000 lbs of food waste from landfills since the program began as a community/student organization in 2017. In March 2020, the Isla Vista Compost Collective became a service under the Isla Vista Community Services District, allowing IVCC to continue its composting services and make plans for expanding services throughout Isla Vista. The current staff includes 6 Dirtriders picking up compost from households, a Data Analyst measuring the program’s productivity, a Marketing Manager, and an Operations Manager.

About the Position

IVCC’s Dirtriders are responsible for picking up food waste from participating households each week and communicating with residents frequently to ensure a positive composting experience. Dirtriders pick up five-gallon compost buckets from houses in Isla Vista via bicycle and cargo trailer. When picking up the full compost buckets, Dirtriders also drop off clean buckets to participating households. Households are serviced weekly and buckets are taken to local compost piles where the food waste is sorted, weighed, and recorded. Dirtriders are responsible for inputting food waste data in Excel and maintaining frequent communication with their assigned houses via text message. After dropping off the food waste at community compost piles, Dirtriders are responsible for cleaning all dirty buckets. Dirtriders are expected to attend weekly Isla Vista Compost Collective meetings, complete assigned tasks, and communicate with the Operations Manager if any issues arise during shifts. Dirtriders are also required to maintain the Estero Park Compost pile by turning the compost when necessary, measuring the temperature of the piles, and recording it in Excel.
