Civic Leaders Initiative: The Intersection of Local Government and Community Advocacy

Welcome to the Civic Leaders Initiative, a 7-week course designed to empower community members to become effective advocates, leaders, and changemakers in Isla Vista and beyond. Whether you're new to local governance or have some experience, this course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and resources to make a real impact in your community.

Whether you’re a student, a long-term resident, or someone passionate about making a difference, this course equips you with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to become a leader not just in Isla Vista, but in any community you’re a part of.

The advocacy, governance, and community engagement skills you'll gain are universally applicable and can be carried with you wherever you go, whether you remain in Isla Vista or move on to a new town or city. As you embark on new journeys, you’ll be empowered to make a positive impact in any local setting—helping to strengthen neighborhoods, advocate for environmental and social justice, and create meaningful, lasting change.

Important Dates for the Civic Leaders Initiative (CLI)

We are excited to launch the Civic Leaders Initiative (CLI) in January 2025! Classes are held Thursdays, from 6pm-7pm, with the exception of the first and last class both being 90 minutes.. Here are the key dates you need to know:

  • Applications Open: November 26, 2024
    Begin your journey to becoming a community leader by applying for the program.
  • Applications Close: December 31, 2024
    Don’t miss out—make sure to submit your application before the deadline.
  • Student Confirmation: January 3, 2025
    Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the program.
  • Class Begins: January 16, 2025
    Get ready to start your classes and dive into learning!
  • Last Class: February 27, 2025
    Celebrate your completion of the program and take the next steps in becoming an empowered community advocate.

Who can take the Civic Leaders Initiative Course?

Anyone can join IVCSD's Civic Leaders Initiative course! You do NOT need to be a student at UCSB, SBCC, or any other institution to participate. This course offers valuable skills anyone can use to advocate for change in their community and throughout their lives.
