Cliff safety is a major issue that is unique to our community.
Since 1994, there have been at least 14 deaths and numerous life-threatening accidents as a result of cliff falls.
Compiled below are all the resources you need as an Isla Vista resident to educate yourself on cliff safety, understand the science behind erosion, access safety resources, and remember our community members who have lost their lives as a result of cliff falls.
Bluff Safety Letter Template for Tenants:
This winter is an El Niño season, which means more frequent and intense storms and a higher risk of bluff erosion. If you live in a bluffside property in Isla Vista, you can ask your landlord or property manager for basic safety information about how close your home is to the bluff edge.
We’ve created a letter template to help. It asks your landlord to confirm whether any part of your building, including decks, is within 20 feet of the bluff edge, and to share any bluff measurements submitted to Santa Barbara County.
