The 24x MTD Bus Line

The 24x runs directly between Isla Vista/UCSB and downtown Santa Barbara, making it the most affordable and straightforward option for most trips. It's a great choice for errands, appointments, nights out, or any trip where you're not racing the clock.

Worth knowing: the 24x runs from 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM. For most students, that's plenty. But if you work a job downtown or in Goleta with early morning or late night shifts, the bus schedule may not line up with your work hours, more on that below.

Uber or Lyft

For trips outside the 24x's operating hours, or when you need to get somewhere quickly, Uber and Lyft are reliable backup options. They're more expensive than the bus, but for occasional trips, especially late at night or early morning, they can be worth the cost for the time and convenience.

Zipcar or Turo

If you have a valid license and need a car for a few hours or a full day, whether for a Costco run, a day trip, or just having a car on hand for a specific occasion, Zipcar and Turo let you rent a car without owning one. This can be a good middle ground for trips that are hard to do by bus or rideshare, without the cost and hassle of owning a car full-time in Isla Vista.

The 24x doesn't run late enough or early enough for every work schedule, and relying on the bus for a daily commute can add real time and stress to your day.
