Transportation & Parking in Isla Vista

A busy pathway with numerous people riding bicycles, set in a green, outdoor environment. It's a vibrant scene full of activity.

Biking

Isla Vista, Goleta, and Santa Barbara are bike-friendly, with paths on major streets and over 7 miles across campus. Over 10,000 people bike-commute to UCSB daily, cutting pollution, traffic, and cost. First-time riders should test routes beforehand. For safety, wear a helmet and lights, use a strong U-lock, register your bike with CSOs, and service it regularly (AS Bike Shop offers free tune-ups and paid services). Use the Santa Barbara County bike map, Google Maps' bike routes, or UCSB's free campus bike map to navigate. TAP offers bike locker storage for those commuting over two miles to UCSB campus, and bikes are allowed on Amtrak trains and MTD buses.

Trains

Amtrak serves Santa Barbara's south coast via two routes: the Pacific Surfliner (San Luis Obispo to San Diego) and the Coast Starlight (Seattle to Los Angeles), with tickets starting around $35. Route, fare, and service details are on Amtrak's website. The Goleta station (GTA, 25 S. La Patera Lane) is closest to UCSB and served by the Pacific Surfliner; the Santa Barbara station (SBA, 209 State Street) is served by both routes. MTD buses connect to both stations, and The Wave microtransit offers $3 rides to the Goleta station.
