Call for Yoga Instructor - Isla Vista Community Center

Independent Contractor Opportunity

The Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) is seeking a qualified yoga instructor to lead classes at the Isla Vista Community Center, located at 976 Embarcadero del Mar, Isla Vista, CA 93117. The instructor will provide welcoming, accessible classes for community members of all experience levels, helping make the Community Center a space for wellness, connection, and care.

This is an independent contractor engagement. The instructor is retained to provide a service to the community and is not an employee of the IVCSD.

 

What We Are Looking For 

 

  • A current, certified yoga instructor (RYT-200 through Yoga Alliance or an equivalent recognized certification).
  • Experience teaching group classes for mixed and beginner experience levels.
  • A warm, inclusive teaching style that makes participants of every background and ability feel welcome.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work independently.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification is preferred.
  • General and professional liability insurance, or the ability to obtain coverage before the first class.
Class Details and Responsibilities 

 

  • Plan and lead regularly scheduled yoga classes at the Isla Vista Community Center.
  • Class days, times, and frequency are set by mutual agreement based on community demand and Community Center availability. Currently, the class is set for Tuesdays at 5pm. 
  • Offer clear instruction, along with modifications and accommodations, so classes are accessible to all participants.
  • Arrive prepared and on time, and set up and break down the class space for each session.
  • Coordinate with IVCSD staff on scheduling, room availability, participant sign-in, and any required waivers.
  • Provide class descriptions and details that IVCSD can use to promote classes through flyers, social media, and community calendars.
  • Independent class promotion is preferred, but not required. 
Compensation 

 

Competitive per-class rate of $45, commensurate with experience and certification.Compensation is paid monthly as an independent contractor and reported on IRS Form 1099; the instructor is required to submit monthly invoices.

Independent Contractor Status 

 

The selected instructor will be retained under a written independent contractor agreement and, in that capacity, will:

  • Provide services as an independent contractor - not as an employee, agent, or partner of the District- and be solely responsible for applicable taxes, with no District withholding or employee benefits. 
  • Control the manner and means of instruction, including class content, sequencing, and teaching methods, consistent with facility safety guidelines.
  • Maintain their own general and professional liability insurance.
  • Provide their own instructional materials and equipment, except as otherwise agreed with the District.
  • Set the class schedule by mutual agreement and retain the right to accept or decline classes.

Candidates may be invited to lead a short sample class as part of the selection process. Applicants will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
