What is the Move-In Sale?

Every June, hundreds of Isla Vista residents move out as leases end with the academic year, which is right in the middle of finals, farewells, graduation, and family visits. With so much happening at once, packing up carefully often falls to the bottom of the list, and a lot of perfectly good stuff ends up in the trash instead of a truck.

That's where UCSB's GIVE Benefit Sale comes in. Held during move-out, GIVE sets up convenient donation drop-off points across IV so residents can donate their items instead of tossing them. Everything donated gets collected, sorted, and sold back to the community at affordable prices, with 100% of proceeds going to local Isla Vista charities.

Whatever doesn't sell during GIVE doesn't go to waste either. IVCSD collects the leftover items and holds onto them until fall, when a new wave of students arrives in IV and needs to furnish their apartments all over again. That's the Move-In Sale.

Together, GIVE and the Move-In Sale form a full-circle system: what one resident leaves behind in June becomes exactly what another resident needs in September. It's part of IVCSD's ongoing effort to reduce waste, keep usable items out of the landfill, and keep good stuff circulating within our own community.

Stop by our Transportation Table to learn about sustainable ways to get around IV (biking, public transit, and more) and enter our raffle for a chance to win:

• $300 to Amtrak: get home for breaks without driving, or take a day trip to Ventura or LA
• $200 to the IV Food Co-op: grocery shop a few blocks from home instead of driving to Costco or Trader Joe's
• $200 to Uber: car rides only when you actually need them, for errands or weekend trips
• $200 to the IV Bike Shop: put it toward a new bike or upgrade the one you've got
