ABOUT THE POSITION
The Sustainability Support Staff Lead at the Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) combines project management and hands-on involvement in initiatives to enhance the cleanliness, sustainability, and livability of the community. Working under the direction of the Public Works and Sustainability Director and Public Works Project Manager, The Sustainability Support Staff Lead ensures Public Works programs run efficiently, fosters strong relationships with community members and stakeholders, and helps advance IVCSD’s mission to create a cleaner, greener, and more connected Isla Vista.

ABOUT THE IVCSD
Isla Vista is a vibrant, close-knit oceanside community in Santa Barbara County, renowned for its youthful energy and adventurous residents. The Isla Vista Community Services District (IVCSD) was established in 2017 (pursuant to Government Code § 61250), following decades of local efforts toward self-governance. As an unincorporated community, IVCSD is the first local government body dedicated to addressing the unique needs of its residents.
The IVCSD oversees a diverse range of programs and services designed to enhance quality of life, including public safety initiatives, a rental housing mediation program, community beautification efforts, compost collection services, and more. Our budget reflects our commitment to these critical services and ongoing community development.
Our team consists of dedicated staff supported by a network of contractors and community partners. Together, we work to foster a connected, sustainable, and thriving Isla Vista.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Monitor quality and completion of staff assignments to ensure program goals are met.
- Organize and maintain program data, tracking progress across initiatives.
- Actively evaluate and adjust operational protocols to increase program efficiency.
- Monitor and document infrastructure, cleanliness, beautification, sustainability issues.
- Participate in hands-on beautification activities, including litter pick-up, graffiti abatement, and flyer removal.
- Support compost operations, including pile maintenance and food scrap processing.
- Assist with compost and beautification volunteer opportunities and workshops.
- Coordinate and support specific sustainability initiatives such as food scrap bucket rental, remote food scrap drop off tabling, and the donation pick up service.
- Provide on-site support for move-out and move-in activities, including yard sales, donation drop-offs, food drives, and coordination with junk hauling services.
- Oversee tabling operations to educate the community about the IVCSD and Public Works & Sustainability Department programs.
OTHER DUTIES: To support IVCSD operations other duties, responsibilities, and activities may be assigned. This position will work on weekends and evenings as needed.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Google of Drive for storage; Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and Sites for collaboration.
- Web content management systems, social media management, and working knowledge of digital communication software such as Adobe, Creative Cloud, Canva, etc.
- Some knowledge of local government in California is preferred but not required.
SKILL/ABILITY TO:
- Respond to public inquiries in a professional manner.
- Speak professionally and clearly in public
- Work within a collaborative environment.
- Engage with a wide variety of audiences.
- Analyze effectiveness of programs.
- Write strongly, clearly, and effectively for both external communication and internal communication.
- Utilize creativity in order to facilitate program improvement.
- Participate in hands-on activities related to sustainability and neighborhood improvement such as graffiti abatement, trash pick up, and compost pile maintenance.
- Operate the District’s E-Bike.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
Some completed coursework leading to an undergraduate degree or certificate is preferred but not required.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
This is a non-exempt, at-will position. Employment with the Isla Vista Community Services District is not for a specified term and may be terminated by either the District or the employee at any time, with or without cause or advance notice, in accordance with applicable law.
