How can Isla Vista be Car-Free?
Anyone who's spent time in Isla Vista knows parking here can feel like playing a (frustrating) game of musical chairs. In fact, on-street parking in IV is over 100% capacity, meaning there are more cars than legal spaces to hold them.
That's why we're asking students to consider leaing their cars at home this school year. We get it - sometimes, a car is necessary. But if you don't need yours in Isla Vista this year, or even this Fall quarter, leaving it at home frees up space for neighbors who truly need to drive.
We know that living without a car can be challenging, but the good news is, Isla Vista is actually an extremely walkable and bikable community, and your local government is here to help. Whether you're leaving your car at home or bringing it with you, IVCSD is here to help you travel safely and avoid parking tickets. This page has resources to help navigate:
- Grocery shopping without a car
- Traveling downtown without a car
- Traveling between school (Isla Vista) and home (LA, SF, SD, etc.) without a car
- Understanding CA state parking rules so you can avoid tickets
- Purchasing off-street parking for lease near you (Note: IVCSD does not profit from these listings - we've simply compiled this list as a free resource to help you find available off-street parking)
- And more!
